10-22-2014: As Ebola fears spread, states take emergency response into their own hands

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/10/22/as-ebola-fears-spread-states-take-emergency-response-into-their-own-hands/

Several states do not like how the federal government is responding to Ebola, so they are taking the matters into their own hands.  They are tapping emergency funds in their budgets, launching treatment units and holding public hearings to stanch the spread of misinformation about the virus.  The responsibility that the federal and state governments should be taking has blurred.  But, states who have been touched by the outbreak scare are trying to bring up their medical defense in their state, including Ohio where one Ebola patient visited before returning to Dallas.  Texas Health Presbyterian made a mistake when they release Duncan, the first one in the U.S.  He had come to the facility and told them that he had traveled to Liberia, one of the hardest-hit countries in Africa with Ebola.  Three days after this he was admitted back to the hospital and died 10 days later.  Federal Health Officials have proposed that they would have been better prepared if their funds had not been cut.

Should Ebola be scaring people?  Should the Federal Government be doing more?  How should we stop the virus from spreading?  Are these states being smart in their actions?

  1. I found this article interesting. I wonder if it will all be one big haze over thing like the swine flu was. We've kept it to 3 people in America. That's a good thing!

    1. Thankfully! The 3 people were all in contact with each other also. The two people who got it were nurses/doctors of the first person that got it. As long as we keep it contained it won't be something that we need to worry about. Just like swine flu!

    2. The problem is, everyone is so worried about this outbreak that they're having like 200 people monitored if they came in contact with any of these people. As of today, I hadn't seen any reports that any of those people had contracted the virus. This is getting in the way of way to many peoples lives.

  2. I think that we shouldn't be to worried about as long as we keep it contained. I don't think that all of our government actions have been very good though.

    1. I agree. If we contain it we don't need to worry about it spreading through our country. Only 3 people have gotten it and I don't think it will become that much more of a problem.

  3. I don't think that there will be a problem with it spreading any further. I wonder if the reason the state gov. haven't been happy with the way the federal gov. was doing things was because the federal gov. was trying to keep things quieter to prevent a nation wide panic.

    1. While it does irk me the Gov. was more concerned about keeping things hush hush, I do appreciate the fact they tried to keep our lives going about normally by keeping the story out of the media. Because now everyone is worried that they're going to die within the next month because of this disease, thanks to the media.

    2. I definitely agree. Like someone said above, swine flu was the same way. The media just likes to blow it all up until the masses are in a flurry of panic...I guess panic pays the bills for some people. I just hope Ebola will disappear the way swine flu did.

  4. I agree. I remember when the swine flu epidemic was a huge deal and how afraid everyone was getting of it. Reality was that it was kind of pathetic in comparison to other illnesses or even the common flu to me (I actually got the swine flu; cool, huh!). We just need to wait until proper vaccines are produced and distributed, and until then keep monitoring travel from Ebola affected areas and try to reduce its spread as much as possible.
